We all have those days where we feel a little flat for no apparent reason. Whether you’re lacking energy, motivation or are in a string of bad luck; getting down is an inevitable part of being human.
Life doesn’t stop just because we’re in a slump. Sometimes we need to keep going when the going gets tough. When you do, try one of these quick and easy pick-me-ups to help shift your mood from flat to fun.
Wear something fearless
Get on the fast track to fab by slipping on a pair of heels. You’ll gain confidence from standing up straighter and walking with purpose, even if that purpose if just staying upright. Not a shoe girl? No problem! You’ll get the same feeling from wearing anything that makes you feel like a million bucks.
Stop and stare
If you’re having a waffle of a day, you’re more likely to get your knickers in a twist over the smallest things. Avoid this by slowing down. Make a conscious effort to take mini-breaks just to stop and stare. Yep, you read right. Do nothing! Stare at the sky, horizon or people watch. The point is to allow yourself to stop, breathe and give your mind a break.
Smells like high spirits
Harness the power of scent to improve your mood. After all, your senses are powerful emotional cues. If you have a perfume that reminds you of a holiday or special occasion, give yourself a spritz to lift your spirits. Just be sure not to do this too often – you run the risk of associating that smell to a bad day.
Catch friendly feels
There’s nothing like good company to add fizz to deflated feels. Even if you’re frantic, do your best to find a way. Meet in line for your pre-work coffee or catch-up over groceries; the return on investment of time with a friend always pay dividends.
Pump up the jams
Music is a powerful tool for influencing your mood. For an instant energy boost, pop on some high-tempo tunes that make you want to dance, sing and generally put a smile on your face. If you’re feeling extra sensitive, start with something soothing and slowly work up to more spirited sounds.
Buy yourself some flowers
Fresh flowers – just what the doctor ordered for an off-day. Except you should buy them for yourself! Treat yourself to the sweet smell and vibrancy of beautiful blossoms; they’ll add some much-needed fervour to your day.
Makeup your mood
You know that saying, ‘fake it til you make it’? Apply that mentality with your makeup. A slick of red lippie, voluminous mascara or a swipe of bronzer will have you looking better than you feel. Plus catching a glimpse of your glam self throughout the day will be a pleasant surprise.
Hark back to happiness
When you’re in the pits, try to remember that life’s full of ups and downs. Not only to remind yourself that the blues are normal, but also as a prompt to remember the good times. Putting the focus on what you’ve had to be thankful for is helpful for keeping things in perspective. Counting your blessings and keeping a gratitude journal are both great ways to put this into practice!
Have a laugh
Once you’ve got the giggles, they’re hard to control. A cackle will help improve your blue mood because it’s hard to stop an outburst of laughter once it starts. Log onto Netflix and watch your favourite comedy, or find some funnies on Facebook [link to SFD FB] or the blog. Take it in high doses – laughter is the best medicine after all!
Ask for a hug
Reaching out for comfort – even if it’s just a hug from your partner, co-worker or friend, is probably the most underused solution to life’s problems. Humans are social creatures: compassionate and caring ones at that. There are people in your life that are in it for the good and bad. When you’re feeling flat, find them and hug it all out. Being there for one another is one of our strongest superpowers. If no one is physically there in your moment of need a virtual one is the next best thing. Pick up the phone or start up a chat with a friend and let them know how you feel.
