We know that our social media feeds, television screens and any and all sources of news and information right now are inundated with consistent updates on the current worldwide pandemic that is COVID-19.
We here at SuperFastDiet want to keep you informed, being a company so focused on people’s health and wellbeing. A video that we saw pop up on our news feeds really caught out attention and we want to share it with you! We have inserted the video at the bottom of the page – it’s an absolute MUST watch!! Â
Out of the hundreds of stories and videos we’ve seen in our newsfeed why did this one make such an impact on us? Because it makes it super-clear that the connection between lifestyle factors, including being overweight, and the effects of this virus are not receiving anywhere near enough attention, and especially the high rate of chronic metabolic syndrome in Western Society.
What is metabolic syndrome and how is it connected to COVID-19?
Metabolic syndrome is defined by the Department of Health & Human Services, State Government of Victoria, Australia as a collection of conditions that often occur together and increase your risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease. The main components include obesity, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol and insulin resistance.
In the US, only 1 in 8 individuals are deemed metabolically healthy. This is alarming and has been for a very long time, but it is especially more alarming right now considering our current climate.
The video that influenced this blog is from SkyNews in the UK, where Dr. Aseem Malhotra spoke on how there is a major connection between individuals with poor metabolic health and the severity of coronavirus if it is contracted. These chronic illnesses compromise our immune system to higher levels of people with lower metabolic health components, which leaves these people most susceptible to influenza, particularly severe cases, such as that of COVID-19.
Dr. Malhotra stated in Italy, the average person who died had 2.7 chronic conditions including high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.
The Good News and How We Can Help
We promise we aren’t telling you this to scare you.
The GOOD news is you can do something about it to increase your immunity! 🙂
We were compelled to share this with you to give you and your loved ones the best opportunity to maximise your health and immunity in a time like this to dramatically reduce your chances of severe illness. With so much time to spare for so many, we see this as a great time to focus on YOU!
The great news is that with positive lifestyle changes, Dr. Malhotra stated that you can alter your negative metabolic health in months, even weeks if done consistently and effectively. He also stated MORE great news that Type 2 Diabetes can be put into remission if acted on positively.
The gorgeous Shelly Horton, a well-known TV personality, in fact, did just this when she joined SuperFastDiet! Click here to read her story!
These lifestyle changes are probably not things that are too unusual to you, being something you have heard a thousand times before. But right now immunity levels and health are paramount in fighting through this extremely difficult and unprecedented time. So what can be done?
Exercise & Sleep
We know that gyms are now closed in Australia as of yesterday, however, this doesn’t mean that exercise is not possible anymore. Walking outside has been encouraged by the government for everyone’s health, both mental and physical. But, make sure you do it with people in your household and keep your appropriate 1.5 m social distance. If you’re working from home going for a 10-15 minute walk a few times a day or a nice walk before or after work or on your break is sure to help in an abundance of ways!
As well as walking, there are plenty of online home workouts you can find online and many fitness apps offering workouts, yoga or pilates for free or for a small fee. The options are endless!
And of course, ensuring you get a good amount of sleep each night to allow your body to rejuvenate is crucial. In fact, the Sleep Foundation stated that without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response.
Social Connections
You’re probably thinking… but we have been told to socially distance and self-isolate. Yes – please do! But that doesn’t mean you can’t chat with loved ones on one of the many devices and apps so readily available. Making sure we don’t lack social connection ensures our mental health isn’t compromised, which in turn helps you in all other health facets!
Diet Changes
Ensuring processed foods are reduced and whole foods are the predominant form of food in your diet, Dr. Malhotra stated as one of the main things people can do right now to help themselves. Having time to experiment with cooking highly nutritious meals is 1) extremely good for you and 2) a fun activity to do, with more people having free time at home. Of course, though where do you start?
