Christmas is less than 12 weeks away, and many people are ready to try to get in shape…again. But before you pick up the phone and commit yourself to the hard, hard slog of being personal trained, ask yourself this: do you actually want to? If the answer is ‘no’ read on. You’d rather give weight loss coaching a go.
Barbells, skipping ropes, stairs and sweat. Someone in lycra yelling that you need to do more! and a ticking clock that seems to have defied the space-time continuum…such are the components of losing kilos in a PT world. That’s absolutely fine of course, if that’s your thing. When you were a twenty-something youngster you may not have thought twice about it. Maybe in your thirties too. Yet somehow, somewhere along the line, did it just get a whole lot harder?
These days, does the idea of squeezing into those tights and having your heart hammer like a nervous little drummer boy in the first five minutes of working out make you feel like hanging up the Nikes already? Are you actually thinking ‘I’d rather be overweight than go through that?’ A little bit? Um, actually, a whole lot?
And yet, carrying excess weight continues to play havoc with people’s mental and physical health, which seems to leave you stuck between ‘overweight’ and a too-hard place.
But what if there was a far, far easier way?
Well, hold onto your running-shoe-laces because guess what?…There is.
SuperFastDiet co-founders Gen Davidson and Victoria Black explain how they came up with the idea of introducing Weight Loss Coaching, and why.
‘We have so many friends who’ve battled with their weight, especially as they’ve gotten older,’ Victoria says. ‘The average woman gains 5 kilos just for going through menopause and that’s only one of the factors against us fighting the bulge.’
Traditionally, the diet and fitness industry falls into two categories: diet and exercise.
‘The diet industry tends to encourage but not really push exercise, and the fitness industry is the other way around,’ Gen explains. ‘Having been involved professionally in both for over thirty years, I’ve noticed each have their strengths, but if you’re trying to do something too hard you’re simply not going to stick to it.’
‘If you are being made to follow a lettuce leaf existence you’re going to fall off the wagon, and if you’re being made to do something far too strenuous that you actually hate, likewise.’
Gen and Victoria knew they’d found the answer to the diet dilemma, launching their award-winning ‘part-time diet’, an online intermittent fasting program in 2018. It was always their dream to add some kind of personal one-on-one coaching, however, and the strain on an isolated society when Covid hit accelerated that need.
‘People needed help with motivation and self-belief more than ever,’ Victoria says. ‘Obesity was on the rise worldwide during lockdown. It was a crisis within a crisis.’
And so, Gen and Victoria implemented a ground-breaking Weight Loss Coaching component into SuperFastDiet. They wanted something accessible to all and multi-levelled, based on the needs of the individual, but they also wanted to focus on that word: kind.
‘In the challenging, Covid-ridden world, the last thing anyone needed was to be made to feel like a failure or be discouraged,’ Victoria said. ‘Our weight loss coaches are all graduates of our program who have successfully lost their weight and kept it off, but, more importantly every single one of them has been hand-picked because they are kind.’
‘We want our members to be uplifted, encouraged,’ Gen agrees. ‘We know that works better than anything else towards becoming self-empowered.’
‘Weight loss is as much a mental battle as a physical one,’ Victoria agrees. ‘The results our members are getting have exceeded even our expectations, and they haven’t just lost weight in droves, they are happier in their own lives. It’s inspirational to witness it.’
‘This is a game changer,’ Gen says. ‘It’s amazing to see how a more gentle approach to weight loss has become so incredibly popular, so fast, but I suppose the answer was there all along: just make it easier for people to stick to it,’ she says, ‘and yes, just be kind.’

- Before you started SuperFastDiet, how did you feel about your weight and yourself in general?
For years I’ve presented myself as this confident, happy and carefree person. But in all honesty, that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
On the inside I was struggling with low self-esteem, self-doubt, self-criticism and a severe lack of self-worth. I was suffering from depression and battling ongoing health issues.
I started wearing my hair differently, dressing differently, getting my nails, eyelashes and eyebrows done regularly…all in the hopes of trying to feel better about myself. It didn’t work.
And pretending to be okay and confident and happy all the time was getting exhausting.
I was refusing to be in any photos or hiding at the back if I didn’t have another option. I was asking friends and family if I could see the pics first before they shared them (often deleting them out of sheer embarrassment).
For every family memory or special occasion that warranted a picture, the pictures that I did allow of me were often carefully selected from the thousand I’d insisted on taking in the hopes there’d be one I was comfortable with sharing – and even then it was usually picking one that was the best of the worst.
I was losing interest in social activities, I was snapping at my loved ones for no reason, I was irritable, I was losing my sense of humour and fun. I was losing the very last little bits of myself that made me ME!
- What else had you tried before and how did that go?
For as long as I can remember I’ve struggled to maintain my weight. I’ve tried shake diets, Lemon detox diets, Weight Watchers, Banting (LCHF), Dr Dukan diet, Restricted Calorie diets, Gym prescribed meal plans and even Doctor prescribed medication and injections.
I’ve signed up to every fad exercise regime from PT to CrossFit, F45 and Strength/Weight Training to Dance Classes, Spin Classes, Yoga and Pilates.
All of these helped me lose weight quickly and over a short amount of time but I always ended up putting the weight (plus more) back on just as quickly.
None of the diets, eating plans or strict exercise I tried were sustainable for me long term. I found the heavily restricted calories and meal plans difficult to stick to. The complicated meal prepping and expensive grocery shopping would become too stressful and overwhelming. And the constant, rigorous exercise often ended with injury or long periods of fatigue that saw me lose my motivation to keep going.
- How would you describe that ‘before SuperFastDiet’ stage in a few words?
I felt stuck and hopeless. I’d become resigned to the fact that I would never be the truly confident, energetic and fun person I used to be. This was how my life was going to be and there was nothing I could do to change that. I’d tried it all…
- How did you find the program initially? Did you get results?
My beautiful aunt had been on the program for a while and had had great success, losing over 20kgs in less than a year, all while still enjoying her nibbles, wine and active social life. The changes in her were not just physical, she seemed even brighter than normal, so much happier and more positive. She was radiating with confidence and the truly genuine joy that I saw and heard in her was so inspiring. I knew that that was something I was aching to feel again too.
So I took the plunge and signed up, still sceptical that it would be another short-lived attempt at losing weight and trying to get my old self back, but knowing that I really didn’t have anything else to lose at that point.
But as it turns out, it was just as easy and maintainable as my aunt and many others had made it sound. To say I was beyond thrilled when I was able to gift 2.7kgs in my first week is an understatement.
- What was different about SuperFastDiet and why did it start working for you?
The biggest difference was definitely how flexible the program was. It was so refreshing to find a program that fitted in with my busy life instead of having to change my life to suit the diet.
As a small business owner and mum to two gorgeous but very active small boys, it has always been a struggle to follow and stick to strict diets and meal plans without it becoming too overwhelming and disruptive to my family and lifestyle.
Having the three different methods to choose from meant I could quickly and easily adapt my diet to suit my busy mum/work life, make allowances for social events, prepare food within my cooking capabilities (which is limited because I’m a “heat ‘n eat” kind of girl) and all without spending hours in the kitchen or a fortune at the supermarket.
The amazing group of like-minded, incredibly supportive and empowering women in the SFD community also plays an integral part in making this program the success it is.
To be surrounded by a tribe of genuinely kind, compassionate, strong and supportive women on a daily basis has been an absolute game-changer.
I am continually inspired and motivated by the SFD community who never fail to accept you as you are, who celebrate your wins and guide you through your difficult days. I’ve finally found my village and my safe haven.
- What was the big difference when it came to weight loss coaching?
Coaching definitely took my journey to another level.
Following the SFD program and the three methods it offers is easy. It’s changing your mindset and old habits that is the hard part. And that’s where Coaching comes in.
The Coaches do so much more than just guide you through the program and the various methods. They’re there to help you set and achieve your goals, they’re there to keep you accountable, they’re there to talk you through your challenges and find solutions. They’re there to motivate and inspire you when you’re feeling a little low and they’re always, always there to cheer you on and celebrate your successes.
Through Coaching, I’ve achieved so much more than just weight loss. I’ve been given the tools to identify and overcome the things that have held me back for so long.
My Coach has helped me to realise how strong and resilient I am, how worth it is to invest time in myself without feeling guilty about it, kept me inspired and motivated every day.
- How much weight have you lost?
I have gifted 15kgs AND I’ve achieved all of this while also dealing with depression, ongoing health issues and spending three months recovering from surgery for a badly broken leg. So if I can do it, anyone can!
- How do you feel now – about your weight and yourself in general?
Being in a better mindset has already given me my life back. I’ve reclaimed the energy and zest for life that I thought I’d lost forever. I’m no longer a spectator, watching the world carry on around me. You’ll find me front and centre of every family adventure, every special moment. And I’ll be smiling, with a real smile this time. A smile that is a genuine reflection of how full my heart is with happiness and love.
You’ll find me meditating and visualising my “happy” instead of reaching into the pantry to quell my feelings with food. You’ll find me reaching for water instead of frappes and fizzy drinks.
You’ll find me sitting in the sunshine or staring at the stars as I count all the things I’m grateful for instead of staring at my phone or the TV trying to distract myself from my unhappiness.
You’ll even find me poolside strutting my mum bod in a bikini with nothing but pride and self-acceptance. Even though I know my lumps and bumps might be bigger and more obvious than some of the other women nearby in their skimpy togs and with their magazine-worthy perfect figures. Because I now know how worthy I am. I’ve come to accept that my body (while different) is just as beautiful as anyone else’s and it’s a testament to the life I’ve had and the struggles I’ve survived. It’s perfectly imperfect, it’s mine and I’m proud of it.
- How would you describe ‘after SuperfastDiet and Weight Loss Coaching’ in a few words?
The combination of the SFD program and Coaching has changed my life in ways I didn’t even realise it needed changing. It’s helped me learn to love myself again, it’s helped me rediscover the truly confident, happy and positive person I am.
It’s helped me to reclaim my happy, making me a better mum, wife, daughter, sister and friend. And I have no doubt that my family, friends and loved ones would agree.
- What would your advice be to anyone thinking about trying weight loss coaching?
