Cooking at home is a chance to cook up & experiment with delicious, healthy foods, learn some new skills and feel accomplished – how good is it saying, ‘look what I made!’ You might just discover you are a born chef or your new favourite dinner to add to your go-tos. There are so many awesome positives to cooking at home. Here are some of our favourite ways to ensure you are getting the most out of it today!
Do a Pantry Clean
Don’t self-sabotage and have a tonne of packaged food sitting there staring at you from the cupboard! By filling your fridge and pantry full with the right stuff, then naturally, it will be more likely for you to want to cook with all the fresh and delicious looking produce you have stocked up.
Fresh Is Best
Ensuring almost all of your meals are made using fresh ingredients is so important. The more colour the better! Support your local delis, grocers and butchers and get yourself the freshest food you can to create some delicious meals! Your body & tastebuds will certainly thank you.
Grow Your Own Ingredients
Whether it be herbs or veggies, growing your own ingredients is not only fresher but also more economical! Never again will you have to buy a whole bunch of parsley when you only need one sprig! A small herb garden is incredibly easy to create, super affordable and can be as small or as large as you wish. Veggies can take up a little more room, but why not grow veggies that you use constantly! What an accomplishment!
Get Everyone Involved
Making preparing meals a time to include the whole family is an awesome idea. It gets everyone bonding, being creative and of course learning lifelong new skills. Absolutely, maybe don’t let the youngens chop up all the vegetables, but it could be washing the veg or stirring through the stir fry! For older kids make it a comp and get them to create some new meals each week. It means less cooking for you, and gets them learning a brand new skill that is so important for life!
Change It Up
It is so easy to stick to your favourite meals and do them on repeat each week as it generally can save you time, thought and disagreement. It is great to have your go-to meals, but why not change up your protein source or how you consume your vegetables? Why not try out this veggie-filled frittata or these awesome seafood recipes? You can get some awesome inspiration in our member’s recipe library with hundreds of recipes for all dietary requirements.
Create Your Own Flavours
Buying taco seasoning? You can simply make that with a few spices that you probably already have in your cupboard! How about that salad dressing that you love, but is full of sugar? In no time you can whip a delicious one up with a few condiments already on hand! Have a quick google for your favourite flavour adding seasoning or sauces to see how easily you can create your own – and many without the nasties that you don’t necessarily need! It also saves a little cha-ching, so that always helps, right?
Plate Up Right
Do you know the classic image of what your plate should look like for a healthy balance? It’s simple! Half the plate should be full of delicious and colourful veg, a quarter of the plate with a source of protein and the other quarter with complex carbohydrates. You might think this is something you’ve heard many times and is a little old school – but it is repeated for a good reason! This will never go out of style. In fact, here is exactly what we mean the SFD way – with a bit of lols and colour!
