Celebrations, BBQs, social functions, family commitments, there’s no denying that the silly season is well and truly upon us. If you have just embarked on your health and fitness journey, and want to stay healthy and on track with your goals during the holidays, then this is a must-read!
We will be the first to tell you that you don’t have to completely sacrifice your social life and miss out on all the Christmas festivities. There’s no doubt that Christmas will throw a spanner in the works when it comes to staying on track with weight loss – so here are our top tips to staying healthy, all while you smash your weight loss goals this silly season!
1. Be smart, strategic and savvy with your choices
If you can’t resist the festive Christmas pudding, that’s totally fine! Just be a little mindful. To save room for indulging in your favourite Christmas treats, we recommend consuming fewer calories prior to the event or the day after. This will also help buffer the excessive calories you are likely to consume later in the week. Now – don’t get us wrong, by this, we don’t mean grazing on leafy greens all day long! Rather make your other meals in lead up to the event higher in protein and lower in calories – packed with plenty of fibre. Our favourite picks include fresh salads, low-calorie soups, and lean meats.
Or rather than focusing on the foods you can’t eat, focus on limiting your eating window. This is why we love intermittent fasting! After a night celebration, hold-off eating until lunch time! Stopped eating at 9 pm? Then save your next meal to 1 pm the following day. Why not make it a fast day if you’re not that hungry the following day? Pre-planning will still allow you to enjoy your favourite festive foods without going overboard on calories.
2. Bring a dish
Christmas time will often justify bursting the seams with some sugar-loaded sweets or reaching for a second helping of mince pies. One way around this is to bring your own healthy dish to the party! Why not try the SuperFastDiet low-calorie rum balls? They are a real crowd-favourite!Â
If you have more of a hankering for savoury treats, bring a salad that will compliment the meal. Simply pile up salad first and then add all the extra bits and pieces to your plate. There are stacks of mouthwatering sides and vegetable dishes to choose from in the SuperFastDiet members’ library.
3. Get your sweat on!
Squeeze in a morning workout if you know your day will be jam-packed! If the thought of getting up an hour earlier is your forte, try going for a walk with the relatives – it’s a great way to catch up, enjoy fresh air and burn off a few calories.
Party festivities got you in the mood? Tap your feet, nod your head, and shake that booty for a killer workout. You can expect to burn 450 in just one hour of shuffling from side to side.
4. Pick your poison!
Alcohol isn’t the devil. Rather, it’s how much you consume that will creep up your caloric intake for the day. Rather than opting for a calorie-dense, sugar loaded cocktail. Try opting for a (dry) champagne (65 calories per glass) over other alcoholic beverages. Know how to pour yourself a glass of wine – 1 serving is 150 calories, which means you should be able to pour 5 glasses from one 750ml bottle.
5. Enjoy!
The festive season is an opportunity to celebrate with your loved ones. So don’t let your weight loss goals sabotage time spent with your family and friends. Don’t worry too much or be too rigid with your food choices. Remember, Christmas only comes around once a year, so enjoy your favourite treats in moderation, and most importantly, enjoy the special time with your loved ones.
